The Home Depot Overview

The Home Depot, the largest home improvement retail company in the USA, is known primarily for supplying construction tools and products as well as for offering construction services. The headquarters of the Home Depot is situated at the Atlanta Store Support Center in Cobb County, Georgia. It operates several stores across the United States, including the territories of Puerto Rico, Guam, and the US Virgin Islands. Besides the US and its territories, the company also operates in all ten provinces of Canada as well as all 31 states in Mexico. Co-Founded in 1978 by Bernard Marcus, Arthur Blank, Ron Brill, and Pat Farrah, building home-improvement superstores was the company’s primary objective. The idea was supported by investment banker Ken Langone, who helped the four of them raise capital.

It was 1979 when the four partners opened the first two Home Depot superstores using spaces leased from JC Penney, where the original Treasure Island hypermarket was situated. The Home Depot made its first initial public offering on the NASDAQ in 1981 and managed to raise $4.093 million capital. Home Depot was first listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1984.

Other branches soon began operations in Georgia and Florida, and stores also opened in Hollywood and Fort Lauderdale. Home Depot operated 19 such stores with a total sales value of more than $256 million. In 1989, Home Depot was hailed as the largest store of its kind in the United States, surpassing even Lowe’s. In 1997, the superstore acquired Maintenance Warehouse, a repair supplies company, for $245 million. Similarly, in 1999, Home Depot acquired Apex Supply, a company based in Atlanta. The two companies were renamed Home Depot Supply in 2004. Home Depot also acquired Your Other Warehouse, a large plumbing distributor, in 2001.

Home Depot continued its trend of acquisitions by acquiring Hughes Supply, the largest home retailer in the United States for $3.2 billion, in 2006. On July 22, 2015, Home Depot went on to acquire Interline Brands from P2 Capital Partners and established Home Depot Pro.
